Being the month of the Solstice, and seeing how the ISIS thread has generated several Secular vs Religious comments, I thought now would be a good time to have an academic discussion of the Christian mythological background, and history. It's no secret that Christmas was moved from Summer (Somewhere around Jesus' birth on June 17) to the Winter Solstice around 336AD, during Constantine's reign. Just like what Gospels were included in the Bible, the Christian Church has done some revisionist history here and there for the past several thousand years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_solstice And you can't mention Christmas since the 20th Century without mentio…

Here are some of my favorites. 1) Solo Cups Few people appreciate the engineering genius behind a solo cup -- how the precisely placed ridges massively reinforce structural integrity, and allow for a strong, fistgrip-resistant structure. Someone feel like composing some Solo Cup Acid? 2) Escalators, motorized walkways, etc. Fuck wood stairs! I'm in awe of this automated set of stairs that walk for you. Walking while being escalated makes you feel almost superhuman. Once, while stuck in JFK airport for ~12 hours, I killed the tedium via riding the walkways. If you've been to JFK, you might be autowalking where I autowalked. 3) Microwaves If you took…

i spent 2/3 1-hour sessions a week in this baby it's a hot pod. 37 degrees inside. it's like a sauna workout and it has benefited my life increasingly more: i experience more vitality and awareness. it's also helping me to laugh a lot more about silly things & see serious things more playful. do any of you practice it? does it help or benefit you? have others tried but find it to their dislike? could you try and explain why?

Hopefully everyone has heard soundbites or saw the speeches on TV. Glenn Greenwald received a lot of potentially damning documents from an insider source at the NSA, saying that most major internet companies have or were ordered to hand over account and personal information including emails and their attachments, pictures, what companies they work for, etc. under Operation Prism beginning in 2007. Apparently Greenwald has copies of the NSA requests for Google and others to hand over and mine this information on a continual basis. Also doing the same with any Verizon phone customers. The official response from the gov't is that this was a "modest b…

I just put together a list of supposedly the best science fiction books of all time.. anything missing? Personally, my top five would look something like this: Neuromancer Dune Anathem Snow Crash (Fall of) Hyperion And I suspect Iain M. Banks will creep in there soon.

Preface. This post contains personal, potentially-embarassing information; those who would wish me harm are welcome to use it against me) I wanted to make a thread about things that are useful, crucial, or detrimental to being alive. A sort-of think tank where we post sincere thoughts about how to make life as good as it could possibly get, given our limited time walking this earth. 1. In my (limited, yet ongoing) study of recent psychology literature, one certain finding seems, lately, to appear everywhere: 1) psychological grit is the most effective trait for accomplishing goals, (whatever your goals might be) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gri…

Topic title is pretty much the question... At the moment, as cliche as it is I'd have to answer Justin Bieber, that fucking "What Do You Mean?" song is damn near inescapable for me lately, and it's terrible. EVERY time I get into my fiance's car it comes on the radio (not her putting it on just on the pop stations) she's even started to joke about it. Then I hear it at work on our damn store playlist multiple times a day unless I'm allowed to take over the speakers... Every time I hear one of his songs I'm just reminded how douchey he is and how punchable his face is. Anyways... WATMM, who do you want to clock in the face, and why?

My opinion is that is great, it feels real as fuck and its easier to get in the moment, but i heard some people complain its just way too real which is something i dont understand because well VR porn is gonna be next so things will get REAL! Im also thinking just like the aesthetics of watching porn in 480p quality cause thats what they first experienced.

A puzzle for watmm. You awake to find yourself in a completely enclosed space measuring approximately 5' by 3' by 3'. There is a single source of light in the form of a battery powered led strip. A small black cat lies curled at your feet. Two questions. a) How did you get here? b) How will you escape? I will reveal the answers tomorrow night.

LeBeouf has gone out of control in recent months. He's lashing out at anyone who dares to question his art. Even those who's art he's copying and not giving due credit. But it's his butthurtedness on twitter thats making the headlines. He reminds me of a cross between Joaquin Pheonix and Amanda Bynes. Butthurt from Alec Baldwin calling him a ''cocksucka'' his defensiveness has gone into overdrive recently with some weird tweets aimed at Jim Carrey who pwned him at the Golden Glodes http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/shia-labeouf-slams-jim-carrey-golden-globes-diss-article-1.1578284 Shia's reation was fail, even after all the edits. Hey guys, feels awkward posting this here and probably isn't the best place for this but I'm trying to help my friend reach more outlets... I'll give a little background: A close friend of mine has fallen on some really rough times lately, he was diagnosed with leukemia a few weeks ago. On top of this his relationship with his fiancé whom he currently lives with has been falling apart. His fiancé is psychotic and unfortunately he was under her medical plan, in one of her manic episodes of rage she cancelled his medical insurance and is trying as hard as she can to drive him out basically leaving him to dieHe doesn't really have family left to fall back on as both of h…

Do you ever have that thing that you always see at least once a day or every other day? 9:11 on the clock? Seemingly every song in your library being 4 minutes and 20 seconds? Post your recurrences here!

It isn't anything serious, but it is very bothersome and invasive to me. I've been getting a certain feeling lately, like a powerful urge to do something very specific. The issue with it is that I can't figure out what it is that I have the urge to do. It feels like some sort of wonderful idea that needs to be expressed, but I'm unable to figure out how to express it. I try to make it go away by composing songs, writing poems, stories, or miscellaneous prose, and sometimes drawing, but nothing works. Eventually I get frustrated and lose hope and that feeling morphs into some mild sort of depression, which quickly just turns into boredom. I also sometimes try to read poems…
