surprised nobody else is mentioning 'thank.' the first time i heard that track i was blown away. actually the first time i heard 'missing' i knew this album was going to be good. the melody from that song has been stuck in my head the past few days.

'unbank' is really weird.

'eye robot' is great! it sounds like some kind of digital egyptian dubstep. interesting. actually, this whole album sounds bizarrely psychedelic. like 3D CGI Pyramids and Unlimited Detail Technology

Figured I would share my listening experience a bit more:

So in 2011 a lot of music has come out and it has been good, boring, hyped, etc. This on the other hand sounds familiar and classic to me already, worthwhile, and well crafted. At the very least, it is very successful and exciting when placed in comparison to the rest of what's going on in the electronic music scene.

Just finished listening to Scintilli for the first time (couldn't wait!).. only given it one listen so far so my verdict will be short like most of the tracks on the album which i'm a little let down by. It's good that Plaid have gone in a slightly different direction but this seems to have sacrificed the feeling of space and sense of journey. I’ve enjoyed most of the tracks, the new sounds and production are excellent but i am sad about the lack of EMOTION and LOVE which seems to be missing from the album.

Still the best album to come out in 2011!!! :yeah:

They put more ideas into 4 minutes than most bands put in a complete album.

Truth. Always has been for Plaid...moreso than any other subforum subject imo

i agree. and there's a lot going on in these tracks even though they're shorter than usual.

definitely need to give it another whirl today... in the cold light of day.

I see it as a return to form. 'Greedy Baby' seemed unfinished to me, and it lacked those quirky chord structures we all know and love. They're back in abundance on 'Scintilli', this is a very good thing. The brevity isn't a problem. They put more ideas into 4 minutes than most bands put in a complete album.

'Greedy baby' was the last time it was all good, at least for me. The mediocrity began to seep in here and there on 'Tekkon Kinkreet' and to a much greater extent on 'Heaven's Door'.

i can't agree with that at all and just don't get why you think that if you're a fan of old? those 2 albums have some of their finest works on them!! i love their soundtracks. maybe moreso even than GB, and DF !

is trail on there?

nope.

haven't listened to it yet but to those saying it's short ... it's 48 minutes? look forward to giving it a spin later.

..but it feels like about 20-odd ! - weird.

i dont understand tracks like eye robot which is just a bass and beat basically. it sounds good but its not really a tune in the melodic sense?

yeah that rack is a lot longer when they've played it live! some nice chords come in around half-way.. and there's just more going on.. and did i mention it's a lot longer! ?????? :S

damn! you're good at convincing me this is actually a lot better than i first thought/heard!!!!!!! i totally get what you're saying and it makes sense. what you said before about the artwork relating to the tracks is also very interesting, and true i reckon.

thank you dude. (seriously)

Fav: Missing, Unbank (New Family Version or Remix?), Somnl. Talk To Us (abstract track) is absolute fav.

Very strange sound, in places like Oversteps (specifically the sounds of bells).

Need a lot of time listening, at first difficult to say anything. :/

sirch talking about autechre was fun.

on topic: i really enjoyed this album, especially tender hooks, sömnl and at last. length is ok IMO

Plaid lended Tender Hooks to the game Chime Super Deluxe (PSN) - I love this track, so if Scintilli holds more of the same, it might be my favourite Plaid album yet! (no, haven't had a chance to purchase and listen to it yet).

I bought the PC Chime off steam on sale for cheap specifically to hear that track... then realized it's not in the PC version :( It's a nice track, but in my opinion, not amongst the best on Scintilli.

Right my 10p worth

Listened to it around 7-8 times now full and as with every Plaid track some really seem to stick.

I think the album starts off weak with Missing, maybe it's the wrong tone but it seems like a mid-album track

and when we have heard the likes of Strata 3 and 35 Summers you would think they would fit into an intro

perfectly.

Eye Robot seems a little lazy, I've heard it live before and remember being pretty bored compared to their

other new live material.

Thanks is where it really kicks off, I guess it's classic Plaid. Off-kilter beats and layers and has the happyness thing going on.

Unbank is a strange one, starts like Dr Who and feels like an Orbital track in parts. Good to see them experimenting with tracks like this though.

Tender Hooks, feels like it's missing something from the version I've heard on Youtube.

Craft nine is an okay filler

sömnl is brilliant, complex and dark and love the bassline on this

Founded is another great track, off-key notes and fuzzing bassline. The vocals are an interesting addition but work well

Talk to us is another off-key track which carries on well from founded, gets better as it goes on

35 Summers has potential to be amazing or into a longer track but seems strange being placed in this part of the album.

African woods reminds me of Porn Coconut Co, loads of fun

Upgrade is one ive been waiting for, has that hanging style beat a bit like Last Remembered Thing. Only thing it lacks punch, seems a little lo-fi

At last another vocal lead track which fits the Plaid mold perfectly, a good album finisher.

Overall looks like they have learnt some new production tricks and like the fact some tracks are short and quick as we have had

2 soundtracks from them now. There seems to be a hell of a lot of material missing that people have heard before so would

be interested to see if any sees a release but yeah a classic album in parts if not a little short.

The openers title tells the story of Scintilli. A lot is missing.

Founded ends too abrupt. I like it. But they could have created 6-7 minutes of music - some kind of interlude where it now ends and a conclusion. But it simply ends after 3 minutes without reaching the finish line.

agreed.

maybe it's down to Warp?

maybe Plaid are trying to say something there... (with) "Missing"

maybe this is all completely intentional.

maybe it's a good bye, 'fuck you', to IDM techno...

who knows...?

i'm going to talk about the remix album next, that hasn't even been made yet... that should be good. or won't be good. or might be quite alright or even just ok/hmmmmmmmmm

Maybe their next release will be sooner too, who knows.

hope so.

like i said in another thread, i'd love it if they just knocked 1 (album) out in a couple of weeks... like they used to 20 years ago... tracks written/recorded in a day. that would be awesome. they could put out another 3 before the end of the year, easy...
