APHEX TWIN - SYRO

yay finally listened to it, i love it. really solid collection of tracks.

This is the most important part of this release. The mindset prior to critique that it's not an album per-say, but a collection of tracks. Listening to Syro, for me, really puts the emphasis back on the presentation and execution of drukqs and how masterful it really is.

I got on the 'phex train some years ago and was initially reeled in by the ambient tunes. It was only until I began to love drukqs that I took a step back and went to the RDJ album and found solace in it. ICBYD hasn't quite done it for me yet, but I'm giving it time...

Syro's 1, 2, 3 is killer. minipops freshens you up, XMAS soaks you in, and produk chills you to down to the coolest of cool vibes. 4-bit doesn't sit right for me right now; it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb and serves as a strange transition to the next "section". 180db_ thru CIRCLONT14 is a group to be played together all in it's own and hint's at some sort of deliberate album-like progression structure. The title track sits common with 4-bit, transitioning to a killer finale at 10, 11, 12. PAPAT4 is surfing with no beach, the earth portal mix is otherworldly and really heightens the desire for more...except what follows is the Sunday morning flock of birds chirping with a soothing piano track reminiscent of releases past and reminding your that there's more Aphex Twin to come.

Having said all that, Bleep...come on now...

Anyone else get the feeling that most of the people complaining about the album on here would be complaining regardless of what it even sounded like? 13 years can suck a lot of wide-eyed wonder out of anyone, don't expect to react to art the way you did well over a decade ago.

To me Syro is fantastic, and i love it more every listen. It's way more subtle than his previous work, and that makes it even more rewarding to me.

I agree with this.

I would also say that compositionally, it is the most interesting thing he has done.

We know a ton of voices were sampled on Syro but we don't know which ones are which. I'm pretty sure all of minipops is Richard but idk for sure. I really wanna know which ones are Lornaderek. I would guess that one of the voices in the 'fucking whore, disgusting' section is Rich's girlfriend but aprt from that I have no idea.

Edit: Imma get a list going.

minipops 67 [120.2][source field mix] - Richard

XMAS_EVET10 [120][thanaton3 mix] - Richard, Dad?

produk 29 [101] -

4 bit 9d api+e+6 [126.26] -

180db_ [130] - No vocals

CIRCLONT6A [141.98][syrobonkus mix] - Richard, Girlfriend

fz pseudotimestretch+e+3 [138.85] -

CIRCLONT14 [152.97][shrymoming mix] -

syro u473t8+e [141.98][piezoluminescence mix] -

PAPAT4 [155][pineal mix] -

s950tx16wasr10 [163.97][earth portal mix] -

aisatsana [102] - Birds :-)

I will edit this over time.

you forgot Japanese track! no idea who's singing there, but I think it's his wife because words are in russian. (...mammals wild birds...)

minipops - clearly richard

xmas - son or wife in the end i think

produk29 - random slut?) (sample)...[product went in eyen?)]

4 bit - sounds 99% richard

circlont6a - richard

fz - same thing

circlont14 - wife

syro - wife

papat4 - vocoder is richard my guess, or father (as the name suggests)

earth portal - wife

hope telps your little research

-Where is the fucking sheer velocity and car door panel vibrating resonance of Girl/Boy Song?

The fucking sheer velocity and car door panel vibrating resonance (well put sir) of Girl/Boy Song is....in Girl/Boy Song actually. & you should not expect artists to re do what they achieved previously, that's basically the difference between a craftsman & an artist. its like asking "Where are the fucking trees ?" in the latest Mondrian paintings.

lolwhat??

LemanRuss, apologies if you have already done so, but i'd be interested to read a track by track review of Syro in your own words.

I think lemanruss makes some good points and supports his opinion. Everyone is getting super defensive here. He's not an idiot because he doesn't like it. Everyone stop with the god damned name calling. You are all being so childish right now. What is the point of discussion if all you hear is your own thoughts? I love this album but I completely understand why people would be let down. C'mon babies lets all love each other. We're a rare breed of weirdos, no need for the weirdo on weirdo violence.

He's an idiot for saying shit like this.

"If YOU can't hear the stuff missing from Syro, then you not only have shit in your ears, but you are devoid of any real emotion, and are running purely on the dullest of fanboy juice. "

So check yourself before calling people childish. Seems like a fair thing to get defensive about, being told you have shit in your ears.

I think it's time for a general reminder that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and you can disagree with others, but please do it in a respectful and thoughtful manner - no need to make disparaging remarks or insult someone for having a differing opinion on probably the most subjective thing ever - music!

i've shit in my ears! right! who want to savour my ears?

Time to get some super-strong cotton swabs! :emotawesomepm9:

well lemanruss knows aphex music pretty well & yeah he doesnt dig Syro (no worries with that) & sure he made some points, i just dont agree with the "where are the porn samples from come on you slags on Syro???" thing. what i do like on the new record ? the mix of quiet melodies in the background + crazy beats somewhere that gives me a adorable weirdo feeling, strange but pretty relaxed, like a flavoured beer from elswhere, cosy yet pretty mysterious.

If I could describe Syro (in comparison to earlier releases) I would say its Aphex's all-around "fun happy and playful" album'. Does it shake me to the core? No (well xmas eve resonates quite a bit on that "deeper" level for me.) But its just really "fun" not to mention fucking cool and interesting. In comparison to his other Aphex Twin albums I find that pretty different actually. It doesn't make me reevaluate my understanding of music or my own life, it makes me bob my head and smile at all the cool things happening in the composition. Its refreshing actually. Its like Aphex-Light®. Not a knock at all. He always goes incredibly deep and sometimes dark. This is practically happy-go-lucky in comparison. And for that it REALLY stands out.

That was in direct response to someone who made the insult first, and you know it. You insulting me for insulting someone is amusing.

Anyway, back to it; for a forum devoted to Aphex, there is surprisingly little detailed review or opinion by people who like Syro. I will refrain from telling you all why I think that is, and will just sit here waiting for people to start explaining in emotive detail what they love about it.

You might like reading the threads dedicated to individual songs on the album then. People are going into a lot of detail about why they like each track. Literally down to 'minute to minute' evaluations.
