do you not agree that the information that a particular album is leaked (which we often share on watmm) is morally grey (if you believe that illegal downloads are immoral of course..)?

I don't mean to be a goodie-two-shoes, but I'd much prefer to wait until an album is officially released and buy it than to try and grab a leak or bootleg. One, by paying for it, I help the artist realize the fruits of their labor, and two, I don't want my computer to get viruses.

Plus, I've been a loyal Ae fan for almost 16 years. I'd be more than happy to continue my support for them with my scratch.

the questions are towards joyrex as i don't really understand what he's trying to achieve. assure watmm doesn't affect sales/assist in the spread of the leak or simply cover his ass legally ? if latter - of course i'll understand that he will not want to talk about it.

Both things. I don't think anyone wants WATMM to be a "scene release" site, because that would close down WATMM and get a lot of people in trouble.

you don't get it joyrex, the moment i, or anyone else for that matter, post a review/thoughts on the album, it will indicate that the album had leaked, i'm pretty sure 99% of watmm knows where to get the leaks already. so this way even our discussion of the album is helping its illegal and harmful spread (according to your philosophy).

Nope, you're wrong - what about people who work for trade magazines - you don't think they get stuff months before release and discuss them? Of course they do. You're confusing discussing that it leaked with facilitating the ability to get the leaked release by providing information to allow them to do that.

 

alright, i was simply not sure of what joyrex was trying to achieve, and he made it even more confusing by bringing some moral arguments.

if you want to cover watmm morally and block it from being a link in a chain of acquiring the album illegally you must at least ban all discussion of the album before its release.

if you want to cover watmm legally then i guess what you're doing is enough.

There's no moral argument here - downloading copyrighted material is illegal, and the only reason people still do it is there hasn't been an effective way to catch and punish the violators.

What we're trying to achieve here is twofold - prevent this site being a source of leaked releases, and respecting the artists and labels that make the music we're so passionate about. And yes, there's a legal aspect to it as well - as owner of the site, I could be held responsible for the actions of the forum members, despite disclaimers and the like. That was one of the driving reasons I changed the rules to get rid of the porn/explicit material on this site as well.

Nothing is going to change the fact it's leaked - and saying it's leaked is also fine, just don't provide means by which people can more easily get the leak, and damage potential record sales for Autechre (or any artist for that matter). Discussing how cool it is and your opinions of the tracks if you have heard it is actually beneficial in my book, since that will increase hype for the release, and hopefully everyone that cannot resist temptation and finds out how to download it will also make an effort to actually buy the release when it comes out.

LOL - "extension of logic" always leads to illogical results. Providing a link to a site whose main purpose is to inform people that something has leaked ahead of an official release is CLEARLY a piracy facilitator, whereas Google, unless someone purposely searches for a leak, isn't cluing you in on anything.

i can't seem to convince you that the fact that you allow watmm to be the site that shouts LEAKED !!11 is assisting in the spread of the leak. i mean the first thing you need to know in order to get it is that it had indeed leaked.

it is possible that there are people that use watmm as a primary info source about all things idm and with you allowing people to inform others that the album is leaked you're potentially making those people who rely primarily on watmm to go and look for that leak.

 

im pretty sure that the hype with the actual release 3 months away will only make people to go look for the leak.

anyway, this is why i asked about links to youtube and such before... because i think that full songs on youtube, for instance, also can serve as promo material.. if warp would really loathe full tracks on youtube, they would put an intern in front of a computer to have them taken down, imho. can you imagine someone watching the album on YT instead of buying it? also if, say, another unreleased track was played on radio, which might happen, would posting a recording of that radio show, or an edit that includes just that track, facilitate "means by which people can more easily get the leak"?

warp would really need to change their release strategy if a new aphex twin or boc album ever turned up. Those guys are much higher on the commercial radar and would be leached to hell and back, much more so than autechre.

 

My 2 cents, for what its worth: do not care for leaks, would never download one. Not even listened to that podcast yet. Vinyl and CD pre-ordered, but will listen to the digital when it turns up through bleep. Autechre have a solid prolific release schedule and i am happy to wait.

did you read what i quoted from joyrex ?

the site joyrex censored doesn't provide (or even allow) any download links, only information whether a particular record had leaked or not, exactly the same thing which he claims is allowed on watmm, if this is not a contradiction then i don't know what is.
