2023: Your favourite music

I'm still considering how to arrange all my favs, but I built this grab bag that gives you 10 albums I that I liked, at random (tho I need to add stuff from the past month), and I also just built a 2023 music critic simulator that will generate some potentially questionable opinions about music from the year, so if anyone's looking for a novel way to find stuff from this year, I think it's a fun one

As always I am flabbergasted by the amount of new music people here explore each year. I guess I'm mostly focused on older stuff...

Anyway my 2023 music charts go something like this :

  • Ae Live 22 (of course)
  • KNOWER - KNOWER FOREVER (awesome album)
  • OPN - Again
  • Gorillaz - Cracker Island (might be their best since Plastic Beach)
  • Actress - LXXXVIII

Honorable mentions :

  • Blur - The Ballad of Darren (very solid album, couldn't find the willpower to go back at it after they cancelled the show I was supposed to go to)
  • Aphex Twin - Blackbox Recorder (incredible tracks, the best thing was probably the WATMM hype surrounding it anyway haha)
  • Death Dynamic Shroud - Keys to the Gate

Yeah I think for me, I've always had a lot of fun focusing on the new music, though I think I found a better balance for new and old this year

This got me to 438 releases from 2023, so about 1.3 a day so far. Though I'm probably going to go wild digging through all the stuff that people mention in their lists, like I just found out about this very peculiar mix of synthy arabic popular music and jazz, so psyched for all the coming discoveries like this one

Did everyone hear the Hakushi Hasegawa single that came out this year on brainfeeder? It's less IDM-adjacent than his single from last year, but I think it should still be of interest to many ppl here

Still undecided on that Overmono album. Sometimes I play it and it hits a spot, other times I can't stand it. Would like an instrumental version. Though I guess the vocals is part of their signature sound.

I hear you. I do really love the album because it feels like its the culmination of their modern sound, and seeing the development of that sound with their prior singles was great but I do think that moving forward they need a change of sound because this type of electronic music falls intro repetition and mediocrity very easily and I feel like they are already walking a fine line when it comes to that.

WATMM I'm kinda disappointed that I found out from mixmag rather than you lot that i had missed a Peverlist EP and a new DJ Manny album! 🤣

They also reminded me I have more 2023 Shackleton to still explore properly. Some good stuff in here tbf to them!
