What video games are you currently playing?

I just picked up some componant cables for the wii, so I've been going back and playing some gamecube games that support progressive scan (plus I have a 55" HDTV now, whereas the largest I had was a 27" the first time I played them). It was a real solid for Nintendo to make their system fully backwards compatible with gamecube, vs MS and Sony who only kind of did it. I had some xbox games I really liked but had to sell because I'm not going to have 10 systems hooked up to my TV and they won't play on 360.

Be sure to play MGS: Twin Snakes for gamecube. It has progressive scan, and is an awesome game. Although I prefer the PS1 version better due to the music and voice acting.

You actually like ASS Effect? Was not impressed by the demo at all (gameplay or graphically).

the demo was not great. there's a lot of depth to the gameplay you won't get until you play it a few hours and start developing your squad and powers, etc.

somehow i already put in like 60 hours on this game, and i know i'm not half way done. it's ridiculously huge.

the sci-fi environments are really impressive, i haven't seen anything this well done before. just the sheer amount of detail and thought put into the little things. it all adds up to a really immersive world. they say games are becoming more like interactive movies, but this one feels more like a novel (maybe because there's literally hundreds of pages of written content in the game).

i can definitely see how it won game of the year awards.

that said, it does have some dumb technical glitches that should never have made it past QA, especially when they had a year to port it. there's so many amazing things about this game, it's hard to understand how you can still get stuck in mid-air after somehow climbing onto a table, with no way down except to restart the level. and the combat ai is a bit of a letdown, you can often find places to stand where the enemy just stops moving while you shoot them over and over (standing behind tall pillars/crates while you can still see parts of their body, etc). for all the other amazing technical things this game pulls off, getting clipping and enemy ai right should not have been a challenge.

There are a lot of screen tearing and frame-rate issues in the ps3 demo, which I had read about before I played. I played it last night and it was pretty bad. Supposedly it was fixed in the full version but it makes me apprehensive. The actually gameplay seemed okay. I'll probably get it. This isn't your standard ps3 port either, as it was transferred over to the new cross-platform engine, so its essentially a different engine than the game was designed on. In interviews the creators said this would mean ps3 version = better, but when you look at the side by side shots you can see that a lot of the lighting and detail is different between the ps3 and the original version, in a bad way.

the framerate is reasonable for me. i've only seen one level where it really drops, and it's a huge room with about 100 NPCs and big windows to an impressive exterior view. generally, the frame rate is fine in combat areas.

that said, loading times for this game are also kinda long. i wonder if the downloadable version is faster than the bluray version..

Playing through Dragon Age: Origins, and finally liking it this time, although I'm having a hell of a time deciding how to spec what character. Having not played a party-based rpg in some time, it's difficult to get back into juggle-four-characters-constantly-mode.

The demo does not do the game justice. Shooting gasbags on a planet surface after a pep talk from your commanding officer is not the best idea to represent the game (When it was first released, I downloaded the demo, and didnt even finish it - just deleted and forgot about it - picked it up used for $10 a year later)... It takes a couple hours of gameplay to really see what the game has to offer, by then you'll be sucked in, and looking forward to ME2 and ME3.

Origins was great, I recently picked up Awakenings, but it's just not the same experience. I'm looking forward to DA2 though.

The PS3 hard drive should be dramatically faster than the Blu Ray drive, unless they hardcore fucked something up in the design of the game or the PS3.

i don't think you're gonna convince someone calling the game "ass effect." seems like joyrex has already decided not to play it.

The power of piracy compels you.

I liked some of what I played of Mass Effect but the controls/movement/aiming were too wonked out on the PC, and I don't want to try 2, or 3 when it's out, 'cause I'm probably missing out on important stuff.

an 8 core cell broadband processor with the only 128-bit software system that exists with blu-ray games. yeah, total shit.

i mean, i'm a huge PC guy, but i recognize the power of said console, in particular.

magicka - this game is awesome, the combat is superb and extremely flexible, the controls are challenging but totally worth it. i think ill even buy it, should be amazing in co-op and pvp and it's only 10$. it has this old school arcadey feel, you'll keep dying for 15-20 times in a certain place but will still have the urge to continue and try different tactics and stuff, haven't had this since braid i think.

What software would fully utilize that cell CPU? I would think very little. I bet at this point the only reason why it would be a great idea to use for processing would be used in a heavily configured rendering farm. The machine only has 2 split 256mb Ram Dimms

Or rather not dimms but onboard un-upgradable ram totaling at 512mb (not good for most computer applications)

at the moment: a bunch of em running a specialised linux designed for distributed computing. being used for crypto.

they have to be kept disconnected from internets cos if they update they'll break.

yep, some physicists have been chaining them together for black hole simulations.. instead of spending a fortune renting a supercomputer :emotawesomepm9: you should check out Wipeout HD or Drake's Fortune which were made to showcase the Playstation, so to speak.

it's hard to believe, imo, that these consoles have such little memory. Xbox has 512 ram as well, but kept at the same 700mHz speed. PS3 is split, 700mHz for one and 3.2GHZ for the other. but, the RAM split also means most games won't have enough memory to play your own music. you can in a few games but it should've been a basic feature, imo. so, all in all, PS is more powerful and Xbox is more expensive (with playlists).

I finished Assassin's Creed 2 yesterday and went right on with Dead Space 2. I still wish they would have made it scarier because closet monsters and cheap scares wear off after a while.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2

I was so in love with the original, and this one is that much better.

After mucking around with jump for a hour, i went back to swinging only, its way better that way!

I loved the first one. So simple but yet so hard. Smooth controls. BC:R is a nearly perfect game for a platform-games guy like me. Did they fucked it up with the sequel?
