What TV series are you watching at moment?

frontline is really under-appreciated. for those who dont know, they do hour long documentaries once a month on important and current issues and don't really pull any punches. it's not half-assed tv news specials like you might think, there's impressive journalism and quality production going on. i don't know how many years back the online archive goes, but they put them all up to watch on their site here

I can't take modern US produced science shows seriously, so cringe inducing. Look at the Brits to see how to do it properly, e.g. Horizon.

Horizon has put out some cracking pieces over the years, almost a national institution. Arena was in a similar vein for clarity of thought, although thats been watered down a bit in recent years

PBS is a terrific resource & introduced me to all the incredible docs Ken Burns has done - an outstanding body of work.

I thought there would be a massive thread here on Ash vs Evil Dead, either the search didn't find it or watmm has let me down. Anyway, halfway through the series and it's fucking awesome.

Yeah, it's great fun. I've mentioned it a couple of times in here. Looking forward to season 2.

Nurse Jackie and I quite enjoy it. Don't judge me.

I also really liked it even if a bit cheesy

But I am a fan of Downton abbey so I may be incline to cheese. Downton abbey + MXE is bliss!

Z Nation is (somehow) fucking amazing

Really, it got shopped around and picked up by fucking SyFy

So I was really skeptical going in

But it's (shit, I can't believe I'm gonna fucking say this) like Wire/BB good

It's like they used Walking Dead as a cautionary tale for what not to do

I'm like...how is a show on SyFy so well fucking written?

It's got a great sense of humor

I just...I'm fucking shocked

So yeah, watch it

I am 100% serious

I'll break it down...

The writing is amazing

The show (self-consciously) references zombie pop culture

It's perfectly cinematic-looking

There is no cheap suspense

No sacred cows

Killing zombies is never (directly) a plot device

Awesome characters (that aren't pissy and melodramatic)

The show's sense of humor is awesome

(E.g. During a nuclear blast, a major character hides in a 50's style fridge and immediately dies)

The show plays with structure and perspective in subtle ways

It doesn't stagnate (like WD does)

You have no fucking clue what'll happen next

Characters aren't momentarily dumb at crucial moments

There are only a few shows I've ever seen where I wouldn't change a thing

And so far (season 2, ep 3) I wouldn't change a thing

And according to the AV Club reviews, it gets better yet

Yeah, I was expecting 'Sharknado with zombies'

But this show is amazing

Perfect balance of comedy/drama (the comedy is selectively peppered throughout)

I'm as confused as you are, frankly

SyFy virtually always spells B-movie garbage

Watch the first 4-5 episodes and tell me what you think

But yeah, I'm serious

Edit: I might be overselling it...

perhaps I'm simply impressed by a show that isn't riddled with flaws

But this show has yet to let me down even once

Not even a little bit

(hence the Wire/BB comparison)

Okay so I'm halfway through season 2

And this show is getting crazy and camp

Occasionally dipping into "Dead Alive"/"Return of the Living Dead" territory

There was just a "previously on..." montage comprised of total random nonsense

Weird ass fucking show

Oscillates between pitch-perfect drama and complete madness (each episode has a different tone)

Wow, glad to see more people turning onto Z Nation. You totally get it Limpy, the fun of the show is you never know what you're going to get. It's always noticeably but forgivably cheesy. The only time I felt like it was getting a bit much was with Murphy's baby and even then the whole premise (and the baby's face with Murphy's eyes edited onto it) was so weird and comical that I didn't mind how stupid and corny it was.

After I started watching it, I tried to go back and catch up on Walking Dead and it was just a slap in the face. The cliffhanger with Glen was the moment I decided I was done, like what is the point of this po-faced, overwrought bullshit when I could actually be entertained by a zombie show.

The Northern Quest Casino episode cracked me up because it's a 100% real place close to where I live - they didn't disguise it whatsoever. I go to their buffet like twice a year and all the shots were really familiar. Also that hotel where they had the gunfight is a real abandoned hotel downtown. The show is so cheeky on so many levels, I love it.
