hesher - dull coping-with-loss coming of age drama with really surreal stoner-metalhead character played by gordon-levitt that gives it enough of an unexpected twist to make this film a real pleasue to watch. in the end it's really cool and odd.

 

argo - really well made. there's oscars hopes written all over it, but it still works as a movie, so no biggie. affleck's pretty ok as a director as far as i'm concerned.

yes! That was on last night. jesus it's too good!

 

also Napoleon Dynamite was on last night. Still good, definitely not as good as I remember. Case study in losers. Everyone and everything (including Idaho) in that movie falls under the category of "loser" for different reasons. Maybe it's not a very good movie

It was substanceless in a pornographic sense, so I kinda like your statement. It was too damn gorgeous for its own good because it wasn't good at all. Still, it was fun to look at and listen to. I think I'd have enjoyed it even more without the asinine over-the-top violence.

yeah if we're talking about carey mulligan's dimples and ryan's biceps then yes it was too gorgeous for it's own good. if we're talking pretty bad CGI gore then.... no.. no not at all.

The Plague Dogs: One of the most realistic films I've ever seen. Too sad and heartbreaking, but it's what actually happens. In real life, true "happy endings" are scarce. The message of the movie is obvious and well executed. 9.8/10

I don't know if the extreme violence spoiled the feel of the film, or if the hipster music video shots ruined what was supposed to be an action movie. It's just that the gangster segments felt so out of place and rhythm with everything else.

would any one be kind enough to review this movie for the sake of all watmm???

Yes, it's one of those things that wants to be cool but somewhere along the line it falls kinda flat. Except this movie never really does. It doesn't fall flat, but it's never really as cool as it would like to think it is. I never liked Josh. But Bruce is good, and I enjoyed the jewish guy/morgan freeman dynamic.

Exactly, well said. I wanted to like it but it kept convincing me to either not like it or, at least, be indifferent.

zero dark thirty - this was shit on every level imaginable. unrealistic, nebulous, boring poop.

 

the great silence - bleak and uncompromising klaus kinski western. may be corbucci's best movie.

 

wake in fright (outback) - amazing, gives deliverance a run for its money in the 70's backwoods survival horror genre. actually, it's probably better than deliverance.

Until the Light Takes Us - 7/10 - I enjoyed this, although I would have liked for them to delve more into their dissatisfaction with mainstream Norwegian culture. But mostly it just made me think of Metalocalypse and Essines.

 

The Vineyard - 6/10 - This was so bad that I was thoroughly entertained. It stars James Hong (Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China) and he also directed it. One of the weirdest things about the film (and there are many) was the fact that Hong plays a Chinese man yet all the vaguely Asian props in the background are from every Asian culture but China. There's literally a flashback where the young Hong's parents are a woman in traditional Korean garb and a guy dressed like Gengis Khan. There are so many inconsistancies or just plain unexplained things in this film, I could never get to them all. Definitely worth a watch and it's on Netflix instant.

So,

 

If you read my last post in this thread, you'll see that I was upset about the parent letting their kid crawl around / make animal noises during Lif Of Pi.

 

Anyway, I got my wife to go in and complain and the theatre gave us 2 free movie vouchers!

 

So, today we saw, The Impossible, the new movie with Naiomi Watts and Ewan McGregor.

 

8.8/10

 

I really enjoyed it.

The story was good. Casting was good. Great sound. Great storytelling.

The movie was suspenseful and had a lot of heart, but was still a bit emotionally manipulative.

Some sappy music and narrative misdirection to get you to cry, but it was still really good.

 

Some of the camerawork bothered me and I couldn't tell if it was the film or the theater. Some of it just looked a bit video-y and digital. Almost pixelated.

 

I cried like 6 times.

 

Highly recommended, especially with family or a loved one. Pretty intense at times tho. Not for little kids.

Yeah, if Drive had been quieter and bleaker with less distractions, it could have been amazing. I thought Pusher was a really visceral film. If Drive had had that intensity and willingness to drift at the same time I think it would have been great. The first scene is wonderful though.

Days of Heaven - 8/10 Story lacked a sense of completion but the images and editing was some of the best I have seen recently.

 

The Thin Red Line - 9.5/10 Might be the best war film (other than Apocalypse Now), again Malick captures astounding images that really give you a sense of what it would have been like in Vietnam. He excels at atmosphere. Almost creepy how his sequences says something through abstractions and then his voice overs confirm and branch off those thoughts effortlessly. Didn't like Tree of Life tho. Badlands is great.

 

Flight - 7/10 Was well acted/made, very depressing though and ultimately sad ending which didn't pay off with much meaning other than addiction is bad. I wonder if Denzel's character was more capable ie relaxed with crash landing because of the alcohol though. The other pilot was far more haphazard because of the stress of the situation. Denzel's character may just be a very good pilot who would have been at ease with or without alcohol. The hotel fridge scene was also weird (how did he get into another room?) And the religious undertones throughout especially with the co-pilot at the hospital seemed sloppy.

 

Cloud Atlas - ?/10 Basically no idea what to make of this movie. The download I had was really poor audio so I could barely understand 60% of the dialogue. Some dope visuals and action sequences. Will have to see again when it is released, but barring some tremendous oversights on my part this film seemed more disjointed and nonsensical than Inland Empire. Especially considering its use of hollywood formulaic aesthetics. My brain just couldn't comprehend how it was made/why.

 

Silver Linings Playbook - 4/10 Not a very big fan of Russells, this film seemed to serve no point. Wasn't funny, was predictable and overtly manipulative with character motivations.

 

Arbitrage - 9/10 Edge of your seat and had me rooting for Gere's character somehow. Very surprising film that speaks a lot towards current society.

 

Inland Empire - 9/10 Liking this more the more I think about it. Will need to see a few more times as it was very engaging in the first half but lost some of its suspense. Some of the most radical filmmaking I have seen in awhile though. Loved how he paced the dialogue in the beginning. Too bad David isn't making films anymore.
