definitely not new. the myspace music player has been busted for a while now (~2017 or so?). 

it seems odd to think so now, but a lot of people were using that site as a mini version of soundcloud, setting up Music specific pages and uploading tracks. wisp and venetian snares were uploading unreleased tracks for example.

I think folks are morning the loss of yet more non-archived web content. I remember some folks on EKT lost stuff they archived on megaupload when it was taken down. People used those in lieu of hard drives and servers because it was way cheaper. Myspace pages have been inaccessible for years but whatever hope that stuff was archived is now gone.

 

It's the zeitgeist just as much as the music we could of preserved that has been lost. It's crazy how much of the early .mp3 and CDr file-sharing era of underground music is completely lost whereas older era tapes and private press vinyl is still found from obscurity.

 

The same select same content is redundant and amplified by corporate and mainstream entities and likewise they can now exaggerate and create a revisionist history and account of recent decades that drown out more accurate yet nuanced and witness accounts of the same era. I heard a podcast where someone who was a kid and teen in the 70s mentioned that NO ONE talks about novelty songs from that era. Shit like "Disco Duck" was in the Top 10 and EVERYWHERE on radio, tv, etc. and people had to listen to it passively in some form. Not one retro show or film in set in that era has or will mention that - you'd think everyone was listening to now beloved punk, funk, glam rock, select disco pop, etc.

 

The 80s through mid-00s are a great example. Vaporwave and outrun has simultaneously highlighted while also creating this distorted idealized aesthetic of those decades that isn't very accurate. It's that ironic listacles and meme culture is often a more raw and honest recollection of what people actually listened to and did back in the day: wear JNCOs and blast Limp Bizkit from shitty CD players.

 

On a personal note I think all I ever uploaded was my mash-ups of SAWII tracks with slowed down and EQ'd tracks by Nirvana and other moody classic / mainstream rock. That and some remix I did for my buddy's bedroom electronic EP. Any other music I tried sporadically in the past I never uploaded / shared and scrapped.

Funnily enough this happened to my old software projects. The stuff I did on Commodore 64 is still preserved in Datassette tapes but most of things I did later with PC are lost forever because it was only stored on hard drives that eventually failed or got reformatted.

Yes, what I can remember from 80s media environment and visual aesthetic it was 90% nothing like vaporwave. Hair metal.. hair metal everywhere and MacGyver and Loveboat on TV.
