Has anyone ever heard a difference between dithered and non-dithered audio? I always dither at the end but I don't hear a difference. Thoughts?

Vocals are one of the more precarious elements that someone can perform in an IDM track. Quite a few artists have ruined their careers just from adding vocals in, even if they are semi-good, and never recovered (Cex, Tycho, some other ones in the EDM community). Hell, Squarepusher was lucky to get out unscathed from doing F-Train on Do You Know Squarepusher. Even as an instrument, over-reliance of vocal elements in an IDM track make it sound disingenuous to the electronic part of the composition even if they're chopped up or whatever, which is why I can't really get into Holly Herndon's stuff either. I'm not tone deaf and I've written lyrics for other people, but I never …

https://www.matrixsynth.com/2018/12/namm-leaks-new-korg-volca-modular-volca.html "And the first NAMM 2019 rumor is in. A new KORG Volca Modular "Micro Modular Synthesizer" & Volca Drum "Digital Percussion Synthesizer". Click the pics to explore. Note the mini patch points (ala Tinysizer) on the Volca Modular, and the display on the Volca Drum. The Volca Modular appears to be a "West Coast" approach with a Woggle modulation source and 2 LPGs or Lowpass Gates. An LPG is essentially the Buchla version of a Lowpass Filter. There also appears to be some oscillator wave folding on the left. Man, this is going to sell like hotcakes. I want one now. Digital drums o…

I've been using an APC40 for years, but my live set has begun to get a bit more complicated. I'm looking for a clip launcher (MIDI controller) for Ableton that has more than 8 buttons across in the grid. The APC40 has 8 horizontal and 5 vertical buttons, but I would need something more like 12 across. The Monome Grid looks like it could do what I want but it's $700 and looks like it will take a lot of installing shit to do something simple. I literally only need to trigger clips. I typically don't use the faders or knobs. Any suggestions?

Nihao! My very good M8 and I have been corresponding (over what is now probably years) about the basic concepts of synthesis and, most recently, modular synthesis. He is a highly accomplished musician (he played middle eastern percussion and Ood professionally for a number of years, is a multi-instrumentalist, and is light years ahead of me in the actual techniques of musicality). He's also a very good teacher - something that doesn't always go hand in hand with musical accomplishment. Also, incredibly humble and probably one of the nicest people I have ever met. Modular synthesis is highly inscrutable to me (and I've only, ashamedly, very recently begun to underst…

Somehow I missed this, seems like a useful little tool to have around. Pretty ancient but still works. I've already got some good snares and cymbals by tweaking stuff the "explosions" randomizer made. I'm sure there's a thread somewhere that this would belong in but I couldn't dig one up. http://www.drpetter.se/project_sfxr.html

I'm very much interested in software sequencers and how their different workflows can inspire and force you to write different music. Does anyone have an secret weapons? Would like to do some weird polyrhythms as well.

Finished soldering my 4th eurorack module today, the turing machine by music thing. Even though I didn't add any extra flux while soldering I noticed the boards were quite sticky and had some specks of solder on them so decided to try to clean them a bit with cotton swabs and 96% alcohol. While doing this a whole bunch of the joints developed a white crust that doesn't look good at all. I googled a bit but got overwhelmed trying to figure out what it could be so I turn to the watmm hive-mind for help. Here's a pic: (feel free to ridicule my crummy soldering skills) This is after going over the whole board, as you can see not all the joints are as badly af…

Hey guys, Not sure if its appropriate to share this on here, so let me know if not... My sound design and software company Slate + Ash have just put out a new VI -CYCLES - which I thought some people on here might be interested in. www.slateandash.com/products/cycles Without wanting to blow my own trumpet too much, it is a very cool instrument and has quite a few new ideas and possibilities for sound design. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks, Simon

So themes or skins for ableton recently caught my attention when I noticed that some people I follow on youtube have customized their ableton interface. I did a bit of research and found people making them available for free and some for money. Found this GREAT site available soon after @ https://www.abletonthemes.com/ Free to download and customize your own or others. Really lovely site , great idea and easy to do. I hope maybe we can share some of our masterpieces here

Ever since I moved to a new place I'm struggling with too much reverb and a generally muddier sound. I thought after assembling all the furniture and filling the room with stuff the acoustics would get a bit better but apparently they didn't. Music now sounds entirely different on my headphones than on my speakers. I used this tool to calculate the spectral profile of my room (though using estimated figures): https://www.troldtekt.com/Web-tools/Acoustics-calculator How do I fix it and make it sound more neutral? Do I just plaster the walls with those absorption tiles and it will magically sound better? I guess I could EQ the speakers, which obvi…

Fellow EKTers, I'd love to experiment with the Colundi sequence... but I have no idea where to begin with. I've always had an instinctive way to compose, no matter how geeky I can get when it comes to the tools I use, sound-design and mixing. And I have almost no experience at all with micro/alt-tunings. And I bet I'm not the only one here to be curious about it. So I thought it could be a nice collaborative effort, to try to decipher it all, gathering our skills / thoughts to make something out of the frequency charts Aleski shared in his RA feature: For exemple, I know I'm not the only one to use Numerology here, and I want to see if it's possible t…

Has anybody tried any of these? Looks like some of it has trial versions and eager to check them out.

Curious to see if any of you lot have thoughts about how to get this sort of bass sound (it's that liquidy 303ish hyperspeed bass that shows up in a lot of braindance-y tracks) - shamelessly recreating someone else's thread from another forum here which sparked my interest but I'm not sure actually answered the question (or maybe it did!):
