I thought he'd be hunched over in a literal cupboard... for some reason I thought the character was going to be inspired by RDJ/messing around with synthesizers instead kind of disappointing but I know i mentioned it on chatmm at some point

https://allo.google.com/ new SMS app from google so far, i'm not getting this. has anyone started using it? first, how can i sort my contacts? people with more than one number show up as a different entry for each number. can i merge them? also, it seems if you don't have the app you get a small notification with the msg and link where you can download the app? (can anyone confirm this?) so far i can't tell the point of using the assistant (besides asking it stupid questions like show me where i can find dank memes in my neighborhood then it brings up a map to guide you to the location) but can't i already do that with the voice command on google?

Kratom, a mild opiate like plant that has been legally and openly used throughout the country for years, is now being made Schedule 1 as of September 30, 2016. This move comes after 1 possible attributable death. To put this in perspective, 18,883 people died from an overdose of pain relievers in the US in 2014. Many people use this plant in lieu of dangerous prescription drugs, and even to get off of heroin completely. Apparently there are pharma companies currently attempting to patent the active alkaloids contained in the planet, and many view this ban as active collusion by the DEA with Big Pharma. (I've not confirmed this) As of September 30th it will…

First off, thank you to everyone who has supported WATMM via a subscription or a donation - the site has been able to sustain itself since going to a subscription-only model in August 2013. What that means is all new or renewing accounts on WATMM have been and are now subscription only, with a minimum of 3.00 USD/year requirement. I'm posting this just to let everyone know that while our hosting costs are still 50.00/month for the foreseeable future, the cost of software (the forum software and its components) has risen to 220.00 USD a year, which comes out to an additional 20.00 USD a month increase. Prior to that, the occasional donations and subscriptions cover…

New graphic novel. September 20th. "Living on the moon. Whatever were we thinking? It seems rather silly now". "Despite the jokes—and it is a very funny book—Mooncop has a particular melancholy to it, reflecting its creator’s feeling about the way scientific exploration has fallen out of favor with the general public. “When I look back at the years of the Space Race it feels as though there was such an optimistic wonder about space, the moon, and generally about how technology would improve everyone’s life,” Gauld explains. “Amazing things are still happening in science, but I feel there isn’t the same unreserved positivity about it.” Just bec…

Headed there for 6 days on the beginning leg of my Euro-trip and was wondering if anyone could offer insight as to cool places they've been there or stuff to do. Very excited to see the country!

Finally, this novel is released today (after years of waiting). https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/alan-moores-sprawling-new-epic-jerusalem/2016/09/12/59f0cc8c-5826-11e6-9767-f6c947fd0cb8_story.html http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/09/12/the-book-about-everything-reading-alan-moores-jerusalem/ http://www.bleedingcool.com/2016/09/12/alan-moores-jerusalem-its-here-on-my-floor/ Gaiman, King and all the others might publish more often but Alan Moore does it so much better. Alan Moore says of his work: In the half a square mile of decay and demolition that was England’s Saxon capital, eternity is loitering between the firetrap tower block…

so I'm pretty sure I'm starting to get tinnitus since the last few months, constant ringing/hissing in my ears. I figure it's probably time to invest in a decent pair of plugs for nights with particularly loud soundsystems before it gets any worse. I tried to search but couldn't find any topics here on it... anything you lot use and/or recommend? I'd prefer spending more on something decent rather than a cheap pair that just muffles all sound.

Everyone has cool weird stuff near them that you can't find anywhere else. For example, https://goo.gl/maps/vQJbxbfocVn A well known (in this area anyway) statue of a Shark embedded into the roof of a terraced house (more info here) I expect there are plenty of Google Earth "glitches" as well that could contribute to this thread.

My older brother came over to collect something he had bought from me and saw one of my records on the shelf, the cover ninety degrees counter clockwise so the title was on its side (Deftones' Diamond Eyes). "You should always store those the right way up," he said, himself an owner of no vinyl records whatsoever. "That's going to damage it." I explained to him that storing a record flat is bad, yes, but standing upright is fine, cover the right way or not. "No," he said, "even standing upright, you can damage them. Even a standing up album can be upside down." edit: he has said this particular advice to me before, but I still not cannot wrap my head…

The podcast is here and it's one of the most wtf things i've ever heard. it's like someone connected Ira Glass to a Markov chain generator, or maybe hours of one of those bad lip reading videos. here's an mp3 of the most recent one - skip about 10 minutes in. listening to it gives me a mild feeling of what having a stroke must feel like. there's a typically excellent new yorker article here.
