bound heat: mistress of souls part 2 is a speculative fictional drama that takes place in the not too distant future after the world's governments have fallen and the only humans left are very attractive lesbians.

 

the majority are slaves who are usually sold between the few mistresses that rule (?) wherever they are (czech republic). one of them uses the slaves for erotic massages, another for... mining some caves (very clean horse stables) and the last one for erotic massages. all these tasks are done in the nude and clothes are only worn when they're being transported for sale (see picture above),

 

director lloyd simandl is clearly a believer of the old adage: actions speak louder than words because he relies more on visual storytelling with minimal dialogue and lots to look at. the actresses are all very adept method actors and seem to prefer to let their bodies (rather than their mouths) do most of the talking.

well, this was disappointing. unlike the previous film which relied solely on showing everything and telling nothing, this film relies exclusively on telling you everything and showing you nothing.

 

friedkin goes to italy to record a real exorcism being performed on a crazy looking lady by the lebron james of exorcists. nothing much happens except the cliche "leave me alone ARGH AHHHHHHH!!!" type stuff. then nothing. then the crazy lady calls friedkin and asks him to meet her at a square in another town. she's actually at a church, so he goes there instead and she apparently goes 100% exorcist. one problem though: he doesn't have his camera to record anything. oooppps

 

p.s. mark kermode got a writing credit so weeee to him otherwise this is a complete waste of time. just watch mistress of souls part 2 instead

First Reformed - Felt like a spiritual sequel to Taxi Driver. Very bleak and well done. There is a corny execution of a trippy, ambient, pseudo-sexual sequence, but i was still into it because it gave me an Altered States feeling. 8/10

 

 

Shadows in Paradise - A movie about a lonely garbage collector. The lead actor may be one of the coolest son of a guns on film. I may be addicted to Aki Karusimaki movies now. Also, I have realized that the perfect movie length is just over an hour, for my add social media addicted brain. For fans of Wes Anderson and Jim Jarmusch.  8/10

Thanks for saving me the 1hr on this one. Have been on the fence since I saw this pop up on Netflix, but this (probably 100% accurate) description makes it sound like the worst found footage horror film ever made.

re: first reformed - the ending ruined everything, and tragically there was quite a lot to ruin. that exploration of bottomless despair mixed with blunt environmentalist agenda was engaging and strong.

I finally watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and it was decent. Good acting and script and directing and all, but like those sorts of dark humor films always seem to me, it felt like just an excuse for the actors to act. Which is fine and all of course, but it takes me out of the movie. It wasn't all like that of course, some good moments and such, was a good film overall. Seemed a tad overdone with the melodrama though. Not sure why it was making a big splash as it seemed to last year or whenever, what the fuck do I know though.

Went through my quarterly viewing of various Stan Brakhage films. Desert is still the best representation of Los Angeles I've ever seen.

First Reformed. So the sushi place shot in this film is the exact one I frequent for my all-u-can-eat gluttony.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Anyway I liked it, had a good message, even with the characters spiraling into radicalism.

in keeping with the theme of disturbed anti-heroes, I rewatched Taxi Driver and then watched You Were Never Really Here for the first time. good run, mane.

 

I recommend watching the film that Taxi Driver is loosely based on, Robert Bresson's "Pickpocket" (Paul Schrader has openly cited Pickpocket as a main influence). It's very different in tone but an absolutely brilliant film. My 2nd favorite adaptation of Crime and Punishment (Norte:  The End of History is my favorite).
