Every time there's a new release there's normally a fair bit of discussion in the relevant thread, so I thought it was about time to start a general FSOL thread. Also, I just started a new blog called Fractional Difference, in which I'll be going through every release and song, in order, and looking at various things... all the facts, connections with other tracks, and my own personal feelings about them. It's going to take forever (they released 180 tracks on the launch of FSOLDigital alone), but I'm quite looking forward to revisiting the whole catalogue over the next however long it takes. So far I've done an About page which explains my discovery of the band and …

Yes, Detroit is where techno started and Chicago is where house began, but although sometimes Detroit house is also often celebrated, Chicago's techno is much less feted. Let's try to change that, shall we?

Hi all. I realized music that sounds like spiritual, etheric ambient glitch/techno is the type of music that my mind resonates with the most. Some examples might be Oval, Vladislav Delay, SND, Visible Cloaks, Huerco S., etc. Do you know something similar? Can be visuals too. https://www.webdesignmuseum.org/flash-websites/sixstation-2002

The concept is simple: include a clip of a song (or two or three) along with the lyrics of said song(s). Ideally the lyrics should be in spoiler tags so as to avoid having a scrolling nightmare on our hands, and also be great. Here are a few of my favorites to get 'er started. Nick Cave - The Lyre of Orpheus Orpheus sat gloomy in his garden shed Wondering what to do With a lump of wood, a piece of wire And a little pot of glue O Mamma O Mamma He sawed at the wood with half a heart And glued it top to bottom He strung a wire in between He was feeling something rotten O Mamma O Mamma Orpheus looked at his instrument And he gave the wire a pl…

What's the story with this group? After seeing the white room pop up on various must-have-in-eletronic lists I finally decided to check it out. It's like fresh fettucini with a sprinkle of parmesan. Gets me pumped for a battle with jon claude van damme. I heard they disbanded after this album and an insane performance involving sheeps blood. Anything obscure worth checking out? Discuss

I really want to do this but I have much to learn so anyone currently with a setup please speak up. I might use this as a transmitter https://www.amazon.ca/Transmitter-Receiver-Wireless-Bluetooth-Headphone/dp/B09J48ZPD4 and then something fancier as a receiver into my old 70s Marantz stereo

Podcast: MEMORABILIA. COLLECTING SOUNDS WITH... Sublime Frequencies Link: http://bit.ly/tGVKoN Founded in 2003 by Alan Bishop, Hisham Mayet and Richard Bishop, Sublime Frequencies has become a benchmark in the exploration of popular and folk music from parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Deliberately avoiding traditional ethnomusicology and academic approaches, they never lose sight of their mission to rescue music and sounds that would otherwise very likely be destined to be forgotten. They work with a highly varied repertoire that ranges from regional radio broadcasts to field recordings, folk compilations and pop and documentary video/film. Mark Gerg…

I've been realising there's a Pan Sonic shaped hole in my music collection.. The only thing I have is Ostato and a few of Ilpo Vaisanen's solo CDs and enjoy them. But for some reason, I've never dug into the main Pan Sonic discography. I'm not sure why, I saw them live in 05 at a festival on an old boat and they were awesome. I'd be interested in recommendations for what releases I should consider next... any thoughts?

Noticed that there aren't really any JC-L threads on here so I thought I'd make one cause I find his music absolutely mesmerising (his In Summer EP and Songs of Forgiveness album in particular). - Does anyone have any his physicals or has anyone been to one of his shows?

It's a very niche genre, and most people don't like it, so I need to target the right audience. As a member of that audience, it seems to me that most of us dislike marketing attempts, for good reason. In fact, many of us hate the most well-known label for this kind of music, "IDM", I think because it's been derided by the most popular artists in the genre (so we can't even agree on a way to refer to our music... off to a bad start?) We celebrate the fact that musicians like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada seemingly have avoided the limelight deliberately, or at least that's how it's made to appear. Autechre has marched further and further away from any semblan…

Over the last year, I've been losing interest in a lot of things. That includes music. Because of this, my skills have deteriorated to a point where I can't play things that I've written over a year ago. ( for example: https://on.soundcloud.com/T7rmG ) When I try to practice them, I just get frustrated and depressed and I give up. If practicing my instruments is causing me so much stress, I guess the obvious solution would be to just stop, but I've spent too much of my life learning my instruments to just give up now. I just can't seem to let myself do that. So I'm stuck in this limbo of mediocrity that I can't figure out my way out of. Has anyone else experienc…

We've had a few zine related threads in the past, but there is a resurgence of private press books coming out, so better to collate them all in one thread. As a big fan of US Hip-Hop during the golden years of Public Enemy, NWA, Tribe Called Quest, Wu Tang Clan, I kind of lost interest when it became more about the money, mainstream success and high production values. Step forward to 1999 and an album that past me by at the time - MF Doom Operation: Doomsday. In fact I only got to know DOOM by 2004 when he released Madvillain with Madlib and for me it was a real revelation mixing the abstract lyrics of Kool Keith with the production I've been craving since RZA when he was top of his game. Still don't listen to much US Hip-Hop but this guy is just the best, pioneering the US underground since 93 and hi…

I am a huge fan of FlyLo, and I heard a lot of talk of J Dilla and I am wondering if he is worth listening to and if so what album to start with? Its instrumental hip hop right? I love FlyLo and I want to get into something similar as well. I heard some snipips of Donut Shop but thats not coming out yet for a while.

Anyone else really into unrelenting hard techno? I still love melodic IDM just as much, but lately I've been inspired by tracks where melody is an afterthought or discarded outright. Texture and rhythm have taken its place. This stuff sounds amazing in a club, provided you remembered your earplugs!

And why not. I think we need a Drexciya thread pinned in GB as this music is the music that all need to hear. If you don't know Drexciya then you probably only like Ganjasufi and Grizzly Bear so fuck you. I'm listening to Triangular Hydrogen and my dick is rock hard. ROCK HARD. Amazing music.

I've been on a psych kick for a few years now and wondering what others in this scene listen to? Already a fan of rock sounding stuff like Amorphous Androgynous, Flaming Lips etc but looking for some new blood. Recently discovered Psychic Ills so maybe somethings along those lines.
